My priority is spending time with people.  The most rewarding part of my job as a physician is to connect with a person one on one to sort out ways to improve their lives. Frequently, “I can’t sleep”, chronic pain, sadness, worries or headaches can be improved by paying attention to our emotions and body through a mind-body approach.  Medications are powerful but often have side effects. I like to dive deeper beneath the symptoms to the underlying causes. When we address them, then often we can reduce or eliminate medications.

We can use safer techniques such as counseling/psychotherapy, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, music, art, Tai Chi, herbal teas, guided imagery, before we reach for medications.

Stress is a large factor in 60-80% of primary care office visits.  Dealing with our stress head on often saves money, time and potential harm from unneeded tests and medications.

Psychotherapy can help heal deeper wounds that may be affecting us as adults. The Adverse Childhood Experiences study showed us that our adult physical and mental health is directly impacted by what happened to us in childhood. I offer mindfulness based and body based (somatic) approaches to heal after trauma/chronic stress.

Chronic pain and other symptoms can often be improved or resolved with neuroscience education and therapies such as pain reprocessing therapy/post traumatic growth somatic therapy. I review your history and do a careful physical examination, review test results and help clarify if these therapies could be beneficial in addition to or instead of surgery, medications or other procedures. If the diagnosis is not “structural”, and your goals are in alignment with it, I offer pain reprocessing therapy and post traumatic growth somatic therapy.

Insurance typically covers medical consultations, cognitive/behavioral counseling for insomnia, anxiety, depression, including help with diet, exercise, medication side effects, and advance directives. Insurance does not typically cover yoga therapy.
